each time i do a gravel vac i get about 15 or so trumpet snails in my dirty water and im sure there's much more in the tank itself, also when looking into my filters there's always 1 or 2 in there just hanging on the filter pad... ive heard many people talk about how they are horrible for a tank and how they can kill your system? is that true, asides from the eye sore from one i see once in a blue moon gliding around the glass are they really that bad? i mean they eat the food that the fish dont eat and i can assume they produce waste that i just vac up on my weekly change... to me i dont see anything bad about them because there isnt much and ive noticed them from a long time ago. should i be worried? or should i just leave it lol

I like the trumpet snails a lot. I have maybe 300-400 in my 30 gal. They do a great job keeping things clean but if you dont like them you could always get a loach or other fish that eats snails.

You must have something in your tank managing the population for you. They reproduce so fast that the 15 I put in my tank became undulating gravel and mass migrations up my glass every night in about 6 weeks. A tiger loach added to the tank now has them at reasonable numbers.

They are harmless even in large numbers. Yes they add to the bio load and you need to keep that in mind as you plan your water change routine.

I have them in two tanks, the loach tends to the numbers in one tank and I am about to get a pair of assassin snails to help out in the other tank. The only reason I want the nubers down is because I consider them an eye sore.

trumpet snails are actually more beneficial than anything, especially if you have sand as your substrate. they burrow and sift around under the sand, helping somewhat to keep the sand mixed up

I enjoy them they do a great clean up job eating most algae species and keep plant roots healthy, but they must be managed before you know it they will be everywhere and all it takes is one to ruin a good impeller and kill you filter, pump, etc.

about a year ago i was cleaning my canister filter and i found what seemed to be millions all very very large, cleaned them out and now i only notice the slight few here and there in my 2 hob filters i also have in the tank, but thanks for your input guys i also think these are good for my tank and not horrible like the few employees at y local big als states lol they are low in numbers and as long as it stays so i think it will be ok :) again thanks for the above posts and your input :)
