Well I had a guy that bought some fake coral decorations line me up with a wholeseller around Chicago and they told me that they got a shipment of Cortez rays in and that they look like the California Rounds and that they are collected in norhtern Cal.. I bought a male and female today and I cant tell the difference between the Cortezes and the Cali's can you? Is there a difference or are these really Cali's? Maybe the distributer doest know the difference? The guy the bagged them up said I really dont have to acclimate them! What? Heres the new ones:

No acclimation huh? Interesting.
Round rays usually have more of the pointed rostrum, but that pattern does make me raise an eyebrow.

Acclimating for 1 1/2 hrs so far and the new male has a more pointed front and infact I just looked close at the female and she is more pointed than my original female. Well anyways I saw them tearing after the food and their shop and tanks were A1 for clean. :D price was right too, 150 out the door for the pair. :D:D:D

I had a ray that had a similar pattern, quite different from my other round rays, and as far as the research that i did when trying to ID it, the closest i could come up with was california roundy ray. The two species can look extremely similar iin my opinion.

Jayfb from shark ray central actually has the ray now so if you want to show him a picture he might be able to identify it better for you. Tell him im talking about the larger female that i sold him with the unique pattern.

Ok, thanks. I was just looking at some pics on the web and the Cortez rays from Mexico seem to be much darker in color than the Cali's. The new male ate with the others but the new female wouldnt come out of the sand. The male is doing alot of sniffing on the females, does that mean he likes them and wants to roll in the sand?

sharks and rays do need iodine. if you feed whole shrimp, they contain traces of iodine in them, i believe in the vein, and from what ive been told the whole shrimp are enough iodine to support them.

ok thanks again. How many of these rays would be manageble to keep in my pond? I'm at 4 and I was thinking about 6 eventually.

just to clear up my last post, im not 100% positive about the shrimp thing, that was something i was told by someone i consider a reliable source, but you really never know. Trace iodine addition to the water couldnt hurt at small doses.

As far as stocking your pond, i would think 6 would be more than comfortable. You have plenty of room, i would think you might be able to put even more than 6. It really depends on your filtration and water quality i guess.,
