After getting back from a trip to Hawaii and doing so much snorkeling I can still taste the salt in my mouth, I've become interested in setting up a saltwater aquarium.

My only question is, given a good-sized tank with adequate filteration, can a rectangular triggerfish and a dwarf lionfish be roomies? These are definatly my two favorite salt water species but I have heard they are not often compatible. Wouldn't the triggerfish stay away from the poisonus lionfish? By the way, I am not attempting a reef setup, but the tank will have some live rock.

What I would suggest for you to do is to try and figure out what other fish you may want so that it will be easier to decide which of these two fish you will be able to house with your two options of fish. Personally, I like the lionfish more, but I have not had much luck keeping them alive. I lost two of them this year, at different times. Maybe it's just me, but I felt the responsibility to let you know. Keep us posted my friend.

the trigger will harass the lionfish. The trigger can snap off the spines of the lionfish.

They also tend to eat the eyes of the lion. To tell you the truth, I've had luck with my Picasso and Volitan. They've been together for a while with no issues, but my Picasso is the most docile fish in there.

I would be careful with mixing them...I think I just got lucky. If you plan on mixing other fish in there I would go with the lion. They don't harass anything like triggers do, so you could add some very nice fish in there with him.

You picked the worst trigger to like. I had one for less than a week and it was eating the silicon out of the corners of the tank :screwy: I gave it to a buddy who had some big huma huma's and nigers and it terrorized his entire tank within hours. He then gave it to his LFS that sold it 3-4 times only to have it returned every time. In the end it was left in a bag all weekend and met a horrible death. After being returned the fourth time :WHOA:

I dont like those triggers..........
