ok I have a Jack Dempsey around the 3 inch mark or so, currently in a 30 Gallon (55 is being desnailed at the moment) and ive had this problem even in the 55, he shares a tank with 1 firemouth who is smaller, and a couple of Raphael Catfish, a pleco and thats about it, he will get a pale yellow color, then sometimes will get stripes, then will sometimes turn brownish, the PH is around 7-7.2, i do water changes every week (25%) and im not sure why he is always changing colors, does anyone know?

All cichlids can change colors depending on their moods but you could also try some color enhancing foods like hikari cichlid gold pellets and/or NLS (New Life Spectrum)

& this isn't really the right place for your thread..."General Aquaria Discussion" would've been much better and you would get far more responses...cuz that isn't a disease or a health problem really

yeah ill try some of that, i use the Omega One cichlid flakes, and some frozen blood worms every now and then, but ill try some of that too

what does the pale mood mean? stress?

No problem

& yes, it usually means they're stressed

But if your cichlid becomes ill or has a lot of stress, it can turn much paler than normal and look very dull. The dots/bands will be less visible.

here are 2 pictures of the pale and not so pale to show what i mean

its just him and a firemouth, hes the dominant, now here is what i did today, i TOTALLY redesigned my tank so here is a picture of how it was before (when they were both taken) and the 2nd picture is how it is as of tonight, hes got some color to him now so im hoping itll stay that way, i have a webcam too if you might want to see the whole tank and give ur full thoughts on it

Nice! I like the new rearrangement and additions...I believe that is why your JD lost color is because he was stressed from you remodeling the tank. It happens with my cichlids too when I'm rearranging or adding new decorations to the tank. :)

lol well he had that color for like 3 weeks before i remodeled it, i was hoping the remodeling will help it come back and so far it looks like it is and im hoping thats what the problem was that there wasnt much hiding room or anything like that

Oh...I also see that before you changed the tank that there was no hiding places really? That could be why...maybe he felt unsafe

Btw...where did you get that huge root decoration...that is so awesome lol. Looks like it was for reptiles, but it makes a great aquarium decoration
