I'm going to Kent State University for my master's degree in Architecture and we're currently designing a vertical city in Abu Dhabi. The project is due at the end of march and we are getting the chance to go to Dubai and Abu Dhabi for a week to present our projects! I think there are about 9 of us. Has anyone on here been there? My school is also cheap and spends $100,000 on an arch in front of the campus but can't sponsor the trip so they asked us to get sponsors and if its over a certain amount of money they will put the business or individual in the back of the book we are creating for this project which will be written and published by our professor so if anyone on here would want to sponsor, feel free! Here's a link to my chip in :) otherwise, what is everyone's thoughts on Dubai?

lived there for 10 years
my dad has been there since 1974
awwesome place
just make sure you have lotsa cash to survive there lol

yeah I've never even been on an airplane before so I'm definately excited! I'll be on 5 airplanes in a week! lol but yeah I know I'm going to need money for it :( Why is my school so greedy?? Plane tickets are outrageous on top of housing and food....

As far as architecture goes, I'm sure you know Dubai is where it is at right now. Even for engineering feats, you will see things that cannot be seen in construction anywhere else in the world yet. You will not be disappointed.

i've been to dubai a couple of times . the last time was 07 before the economy crashed .
at that time the amount of development going on was phenomenal ... a sea of cranes in every direction . they told me that 40 % of the tall cranes in the world were in dubai at that moment . anyways i heard they took a hit like the rest of us , but i'm sure it will still be a neat place to visit .

never been, but read lots about it. looks like a very pricey place. lots of rich people. and they are building lots of crazy world record breaking stuff there. last thing i read was that they are trying to build like the worlds biggest disney land or some kind of theme park that is outrageously HUGE. but hope you have fun!

Dubai, now that is one BROKE A55 Country right there. Alot to see and do, but flat out over extended. Lets build a buncha fancy crap and people will come from alllll over to see it. Oh snap, were BROKE.

Never been there, they are literally broke like a joke that don't want to joke. They have no money for maintenance of the things they built, the man-made island are literally sinking back into the sea.

Give it another 5 years and the world’s tallest building will probably fall into disrepair. The building is literally 75% EMPTY. Where is the money going to come from to maintain that building if it remains empty?

Defiantly go and enjoy it now because in few years the things they have built might become like the islands… reclaimed by Mother Nature.

yeah I've read some outrageous things about over there. a room in their 7 star hotel is like $30,000 a night! but they have done some crazy things like the world's tallest building and the world's only 7 star restaurant and yea they are planning dubailand which is 4 times the size of disney world. and there's things there like the indoor ski resort and all that but I'm not interested in doing things there that I can do here! I hope I have enough money to enjoy the city because after the plane ticket and housing I may be eating at McDonald's :irked: lol

but aboutt hem being broke, I really don't know, yes they have spent a ton of money, but there are people who are spending money there too. 80% of the people are non native and people from all over the world are going there daily and spending money so I don't know what to expect in the future because it doesn't seem like they plan on stopping any time soon.
