Hey all,

I got this fish as a baby with my feeder fish randomly. I'm assuming some kind of cichlid, but I haven't been able to spot any like him in my local aquarium stores. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Definitely a cichlid.
Looks like a juvenile Vieja synspilum washed out/stressed. Could also be a Vieja hybrid.

I’m guessing uro…
Agree with Newworld,
the caudal spot, with the two irregular spots in front of it suggest a juvie Mayaheros uropthalmus.
They are feral all over southern Florida.

and another in a different Cenote below, because of the lighter substrate, more a similar shade to the OPs pic

It does have some light stripes on him that are in line w a typical africian cichlid. I'll try to get a pic when its flashing colors. It's extremely interested in my phone when I hold it up to take a pic so it comes up to the glass but it's like the above pictures where it's kinda hiding it.
