Hi everyone, I have a 2" TSN its very healthy and eats bloodworms like a monster, it has this small little balloon stomach and looks really nice. The only thing is that TSN's has two fins on either sides but my TSN has two fins on the left side but only one at the right side, it misses the one behind the first one. Should I be worried? If it was bigger I'd think that another fish ate the fin but its so small and I don't think it has been with other fish bigger than himself yet. Could it been born this way? cause I noticed this a few days ago and no sign of growing it back yet

thx for any help

i wouldn't stress too much...i mean it's not like he's out in the wild and preditors are a problem...it may not look quite right but it'll live fine without one fin...my niger only has half a tail and can barely get around in the tank but he's perfectly fine. happy fishing

Okay here's a pic, sry for bad quality

He's missing one of his pelvic fins. Tsn suffer from a low gene pool from what I have been seeing lately in the hobby. I have seen several members including myself with tsn that are missing pelvic fins. You're lucky, mine is missing them on both sides. He looks strange with only one pelvic fin, but he'll be fine. Just hope he doesn't develope the cephalic skull that mine and others have! Here's a pic of mine's fins missing.

It's probably because we are starting to get more and more farm raised TSN most likely met more for food in brazil then anything else... and they disperse some of the offspring into the hobby... So the gene pool suffers and mutations become more common... It's kinda sad... I mean have you ever looked at a tank of angelfish at your lfs... it's almost impossible to find more then 5 in a batch that is completely normal.... but on the other hand it is good that we're not depleting their wild numbers... it just be nice if they could keep the gene pool alittle cleaner.... Just my thoughts...

Back to the main ? That pic definitely isn't good enough to tell if it will grow back sorry... Is there any reminisce of a fin? a stub anything? or does it seem to have never existed... If you can't even find any sort of indication of a lost fin then it probably is a growth defect and wont grow back... sorry... if there is a stub and it's not growing back you may be able to poke it with a safety pin just intil you see a drop of blood... This is a technique used to help catalyst the growth of lost barbels in arowanas... might help in this case... worth a try IMO treat him kind either way!!:D

I wouldn't worry about this. It's just a fin...could you live without a few of your fingers? Damn right you would ;)

My prized Mbu puffer had his lower fin split in two by an overzealous Silver Dollar. Months later the fin is still split, since he moves it constantly to hover in the water it seems to not stick back. This has never stopped him from doing anything he wanted. Fish are though mofos, much thougher than us ;)
