My TSN is a 17" BEAST! he eats so much everyday that his belly gets all bloated and wierd looking lol. I was wondering if that's healthy? Can he eating so much be a bad thing or is he just a juvi trying to pack on some weight?

I know if they eat toooo much, they will usually puke it back up... makes one hell of a mess! But I'm not sure if you could feed too much... probably, Id keep feedings to a minimum... and if you want to feed more, do several small meals a day

:iagree:
mine is 14-16" and about average size around ... sometimes it looks like he ate a billiard ball
last week he threw up. (first time i noticed it) and it made a mess (but pleco cleaned it up ;)) but i dont think there was a lot of damage done, he is back to eating as normal, i just dont put as much in

He hasn't puked yet. But he's huge. And it's hard to get many small meals in when I have the work 10 hour days. So I try to get one good feeding in. I can try two one in the morning and one at night. But I guess if he pukes then I know to stop. If I don't feed large he won't leave anything for the niger. lol

I once had a 24 inch TSN and he would eat a dozen feeders in a sitting and blow up like a balloon. I never saw it puke the meal up. On a side note, he only got feeders once a week. I think I would ether cut down the amount of food or the fequency of feedings.

Overfeeding is never good.
Feed him sparingly. Even so he 'll get more than he would in the wild.

if your TSN is over 14inch you should feed him once or twice a week,no more because over feeding is very bad for fish health! read those, they may help you (RTC AND TSN HAVE SAME NEEDS)
''Red Tailed Catfish diet in the wild consists of fish, large crustaceans and, surprisingly, fruit. Very small juveniles should be fed twice a day and it is a good idea not to let them get used to live food at an early age. This will prevent problems with refusing other types of food later in life. Bloodworms, earthworms and good quality pellets or tablets designed for carnivorous catfish are a good staple diet when they are young. As larger juveniles, Red Tailed Catfish can be fed once a day with similar types of food. As they grow, their diet can be altered to include small shrimp and crabs, with the occasional treat of shellfish and beef heart. As adults, feeding should be done once or twice a week, with a period of fasting in between meals. At adult size, most Red Tails will ignore foods such as bloodworms and pellets as they are simply not large enough to satisfy their predatory appetites. At this stage, large portions of shrimp, crabs and beef heart are the best source of protein for these monsters. Feeders can be used for adult fish, but they will need to be of a larger size that those offered to large, predatory cichlids.''
