My LFS is selling an 18" TSN for $44, but one of his gills has gill curl (I think the soft part only). Is it worth the price? Can I nurse the cat's gill to return to normal?

if it's long standing gill curl and not new it won't affect him besides rapid gill movement, but if you don't like the asthetics of it you might have to trim it down. That is a good price for a cat that size, but if you wait and look around long enough you'll probably find one of similar size for free that someone cannot house any longer.
TSN are pretty cheap for the healtiest. it takes NO time for them to grow. I wouldnt get it but make sure you are able to handle a 4 foot fish known to break though glass.
iI've hear about them breaking through 1/4" glass. I think it was a 90 gal that some guy was trying to keep a fish more than 2 1/2' in.
they are known to break through 1/4" glass its happened a lot even in a long tank they break them. they are a strong and fast fish with a nose that is solid bone.
... and a lot of times people get rid off big ones cheap, and they grow fairly fast so you could get a healthier specimen cheaper and grow it...
