Hi folks
I'm new to the forum
I purchased a tiny tsn last may at 2cm I suspected I would have ample time to get him to his final home, 6 months later a 125 litre a 490 litre and now a 84x24x24 730 litre he has reached 15 inches I'm just wondering how long I'll get out of this tank
As my next tank will have to be his final house.
My question is two pronged how long do you think he will be ok in this size tank and ultimately will a 108x28 width x32 height aquarium do for him as I have to budget for this and I'm limited by the doorframe shy of having the tank built in the room and not having an option to move it.
His current tank is heavily filtered with two fx5s
And a 40 gallon sump tank with the heaters in there.
Thanks in advance
Luke

That tank is nowhere near the appropriate size.... tiger shovelnoses get almost as large as redtail cats.....your going to need a pond.....ur better off rehoming him

Welcome to the MFK!

TSNs we get in our hobby are a refuse from the farming industry, so chances are your TSN will not exceed 2'-2.5' by much. So his final house should have a width at least double that length and the tank's length should be at least quadruple. This is again a minimum, not that comfortable at all. A pond (inflatable or what not) would work out too, for instance a 10' round at least.

If you will, you can learn lots more here:

Thanks for the info was hoping to hear it would be ok for him, unfortunately I'm not in a climate suitable for a pond. I don't want to have him miserable and jail him for life. I have contacted the closest public aquarium to me and they will rehome him, I will be sad to see him go as he is a spectacular fish already.
Any suggestions as to a pimlike cat that would suit my parameters

I was speaking of an indoor pond / tub. They come inflatable or hard wall or you can throw one together very cheaply with cinder blocks and rubber liner.

You can filter Cat-eLog on Planet Catfish by size and see what you'd like and what you can get a hold of and afford.

Or just browse through the Family of Pimelodidae and look-alikes Heptapteridae.

You can certainly house common pim cats of the 4-line pim (Pimelodus blochii) kind or lima / elongatus shovelnose kind.

I'd specify my location too.

Hi again

Unfortunately an indoor pond is also not an option, my better half will only accept a glass aquarium that has been suitably adorned by a good carpenter to blend it into the room that it is in, so an indoor pond of those dimensions will not work for her.
I also live in Ireland, I have had aquariums for the last 30 years but have never seen a tsn in the flesh.
I kept 3 lima shovel nose cats about 20 years ago but other than that have never really had intrest in catfish other than a few corys and synos.
I have always loved south and Central American cichlids.
I am currently growing out 7 festae to see if I can get a breeding pair.
I have always liked the sailfin pim but again have never seen one in the flesh but would like to try one but have no experience of them.
Any ideas

Regards luke

I meant the location in your stats.

Cool, you are from Ireland and so experienced. We don't have many members from there that are active.

Use diplomacy and barter to fight for the basement and/or the garage :) Build a shed :) But keep'er happy.

True lima you shouldn't house but Sorubim elongatus would be fine. I have a group of 8 and they are lovely, schooling together at the same angle, is a pretty sight.

IDK what's sailfin pim. Sailfin Marbled Pim catfish? An adult would require an even wider tank than that in the TSN scenario. I have three right now and a good friend and colleague has had them for decades, being obsessed with them :) He can tell you a lot too.
