Hi guys, i just wanted to share something pretty sad. my local petco is now selling tiger shovelnose cats. I cant even imagine how many of these are probably going to get stuck in a tiny tank to die. I was thinking of getting one to rescue it, its only 15.99. I have no idea what requirements it would have, so could you guys give me an idea of a pond size to keep it? it really makes me sick that they are selling these. I have heard them say oscars go in a 29, so i bet they will treat the tsn similarly. the ones they have now are around 7 or 8 inches

look to the stickies they have all the info you would need on the requirements, and pond size it is like 8' round and like 12'x6' rectangle would be more then good...i am doind a 10'x10'x3' tank and that dim would be more the good also...

yea agreed, check the stickies, for cats like that the bigger the better. something around 100 to 120 square feet with a depth of atleast 3 feet would be appropriate.

I read on here that certain petco's have been cut loose and were told that they can order whatever. Usually its the stores that have an educated fishkeeper as the manager. Hopefully they'll pass the knowledge needed to keep one onto their customers.

Please think twice about "rescuing" fish from a store. Remember, from the store's point of view (and bank account), the transaction is a "sale," not a "rescue." Despite your good intentions, the store will only replace the fish which has been sold with another of the same kind, because the fish is obviously selling, which is making them money, and they'd like to continue making money. It really only works for the fish you buy, not the ones who replace him.

Agree totally.

I know it's a sad life for the fish that you wouldn't 'rescue' but it could save future ones from suffering if you don't create the market for them to start with.

If you really want one then try and find one that's already out grown a 29g and the owners are trying to get rid of it for free.
