I found mixed opinion on these products. Are they effective and are they safe or do they as I have heard in some cases actually mess-up your tank and cause it to take longer to cycle?

If used properly TSS (also known as Dr. Tim's Aquatics One and Only, or something like that) works most of the time. Some say seachem stability works too. I have had good luck with TSS and not so good luck with stability. The key is no water changes for at least 10 days and you need an ammonia source but have it under 2ppm.
