Okay, today I'm doing my, every 2 week, water change. I have 2 canister filters on my 100gallon. One of the filters was turned off about 2 weeks ago because it had a leaky gasket. I turned the knobs on both the inlet and outlet hoses so no water was going in or out. After I did my water change, I changed the leaky gasket and turned on the filter. Bad mistake. The water in the tank became very murky and I realized that everything in the filter turned bad. I'm not sure but I think all of the beneficial bacteria died and went into my tank. Is this true or can beneficial bacteria survive without oxygen? What should I do? I think that if my tank doesn't clear up by tomorrow evening, I'm going to start doing water changes every day until it's clear. Any opinions or advice is greatly appreciated, The Doctor.

You never want to do that, the waste produced by anaerobic bacteria can kill your fish. I'd do another water change. I imagine that was smelly.

The water's just nasy looking. Everything's gray. I'm going to do a water change now. Should I shut off the canister and clean it?

I would unhook the can, do a healthy water change and clean the filter our very well. Since you have a seeded can running, bacteria will recolonize fairly quickly. Hopefully there wasn't enough volume in that canister to do any serious damage, but better safe than sorry.

The bacteria was most definitely dead as I believe even a few hours in water that isn't flowing through the canister will kill them off. I'd take the advice given previously and do a 50% water change. Unplug and completely clean out the canister in question and then get it up and running after the water change.

You really did that huh? :(

BB starts to die 20 Minutes after the flow stops.

After 2 Weeks every thing in that filter was Anaerobic and Toxic to all life in the tank.

Hopefully you have taken the filter off line by now and decided to stay home from school and clean i and your tank out. Priorities!

I hope the fish make it thru your learning curve, I will be surprised if you don't have some fatalities tho.

Ask before you do things that could harm the fish. We are happy to help, there have been recent threads on this too.

Don't take this as a flame but take that doctor reference off your sig and name until it's deserved! (some people may think you know what your talking about and hurt their fish too).

Sorry to hear about your mishap. I would do as suggested... do a large water change or two... and do an extensive cleaning of the canister.

I hope you realize that a person's screen name usually doesn't mean anything.:screwy: It could be a nickname, something clever, or just a name that they like. For example, here are some screen names on this board: Hotsauce, Mudfrog, Amputatedbrain. I could go on and on. .
All I asked was a question. I didn't expect to be told to change my screen name. I made a mistake and wanted to know some answers not to be told that I should have known better and I should ask before I do things that could harm my fish. If everyone did that, then no one would make any mistakes. Also, how do you know if I go to school? One should not assume. I am actually 38 years old and work as a homicide detective with the San Francisco Police Department. So please, as a moderatoro, just like I've been told before, let's stay on the topic. In addition, Doctor Shakalu is from a character in a movie called, "Grandma's Boy." The Doctor.

Just do a large water change....Prob. going to need several. Next time you get a leak, turn off the filter and pour out any water that will be in it for an extended period of time (more than an hour).
