i want to have a tank in my room. when i walk into my room at night i turn on the lights. by turning on these desklamps and bedroom lights, would it stress out my fish a lot? how do your fish cope with this??

What fish do you have?
Just flicking on the lights after they have been off for a couple hours can startle the fish for sure. If you have large fish they may jump or hit the glass hard.
My tanks are in the basement, tank lights go off at 10pm, and I always leave a small light on so the wife can let the dog out before bed. When she is done down there she turns the small light off. That way they don't get spooked...

What happens in the morning? or do you have windows?

If you don't look thru the back or sides of your tank you could paint them dark or black to help with the culture shock.

Use a dimmer?

Or just make sure the top of the tank is on tight. :grinyes:

Lights turn on around 3pm and off at 10pm, before that is from a curtained window about 10' away. The times when I have turned on the lights suddenly in the middle of the night the fish look so stunned, just like I would if you shined a spotlight in my face a 3am :D

Shine a light in my eyes at 3am and all you'll see is a gunmetal sheen and a bright flash. Not bragging, it almost happened once. ' 3am bedroom lights come on bright felt my wife beside me and I almost pulled the trigger but couldn't find the target '... Turns out we had an electrical surge and it set off the new dimmer control on the light. Dimmer control was in the garbage witin 3 minutes. ( As soon as I caught my breath )

I haven't exactly set the tank up yet I want a cichlid tank in my room. i'll probably just leave the tank lights on until i go to sleep. and yes, i havewindows in my room!

I have my BR windows covered & the tanks light on from 10:00pm to 7:30am that way when I wake up in the night I watch the fish & go back to sleep
