Hey folks I'm still planning my sump for my 156, and I was wondering what would be a good flow rate for a 156 with 2x oscars and a Royal plec with a 75g sump. How many GPH should I run on such a set up? Would a 4-5x actual turnover rate be good? It will be tight on space under the stand so I need a submersiable pump so it can be housed inside the sump. Also what is a good brand of pump?

LOL come on guys O's aren't that messy. I would say you'd be fine with 5x the tank volume in gph. I use Quiet One pumps been good so far.

i use a mag-drive 12.5 on my 180 (1200 gph)and its quiet,never had a problem,been running for years,you would be fine with 4 to 5 times turnover rate

Yep
4-5 minimum and every step you go UP you get less debris build up in the tank.

I try to set all my larger tank up so that there is never any debris visiable on the floor of the tank. And for me the number seems to be 10-12 turn overs gets this job done.

As little as 2x would more than likely handle the bio part of the filtration. And the rest is just for debris removal.

So it all matter what you want.

If you do not mind some debris on the floor. And you have no problems doing weekly vac's to remove all of this then 2-5 is good for you.

If you can't stand a messy tank and want to never see debris on the floor of the tank. And want to get by with bi-weekly to monthly vac's then shoot for 10-12 or higher.

I use quiet one pumps as well.

I use a Mag 24 on my 210g, with 75g sump, filter sock in sump for overflow water and lots of bioballs. quiet one pump in sump recirculates sump water back into sock. Maxijet 1200 with mod keeps sump water in fast motion, so any debris gets pumped back thru the sock.

Just change the sock every week or two and my tank is crystal clear. I also use a maxijet 1200 modded, in my main tank for circulation, helps keep debris in the water column.

I have 2 Oscars 10", 12 tinfoil barbs 3"-4", 2 Shubunkins 7" and one hifin pleco 12" in there.

Just my 2 cents, and good luck.
