I recently obtained 10 medium sized angels (4-5" tall, 2-3" body) and noticed that they never left the bottom back corners of my tank, below all of the plants. I also noticed that whenever they swam in front of the inlets, they were practically horizontal. It is a 120 dual overflow tank with about 1000gph, so I figured that the current must be too strong for their large cross section. I dont have this problem with my smaller 1" body angels. I turned my Jebao DC9000 down to about 50% power (~500gph) and they all emerged, but still still just stay put along the sides for the most part. When the filter turns off for feeding, they are everywhere. Perviously I was considering adding powerheads to increase water movement over my plants, but now I am thinking I need to slow things down. Is it ok to go to 3-5x hour turnover?

So, how much turnover are you guys running for your angels, particularly larger fish?

Hard to give an answer without seeing the actual set-up and stock, but 3-5 should be fine. Having plants should help with bio load, but if you feel that's not enough, there's always the option of increasing water change volume and frequency.

They seemed to be a little more active last night, even at full pump speed. Still not as active as the 2 small ones, but at least not all clumped in the bottom back corners. Perhaps it is partially just from the stress of being in a new tank with other fish.
