I understand that overfiltration is always better than under, but biologically why is it so important?

I understand that overfiltration is always better than under, but biologically why is it so important?

Every living thing produces wastes. As in the aquarium, that waste becomes a highly toxic ammonia. Underfiltration will not be able to convert that toxic ammonia to a more harmless Nitrate. There is also bennifits to alot of filtration, like if one system fails there is still adequate filtration to pick up the slack...
