Hey guys. I have a situation. First let me start out by saying I have a 46g with many fish, I will be talking about my Koi. Then I have a 125g with a big CK who tried sizing my koi up for breakfast. With that said Im trying to get my KOI larger. I've had him in the 46g for 2 months and he has grown from 3in to 8in. Which is great but not big enough for the CK. Im tired of the high nitrates, when they reach 60ppm, which only takes about 4 or 5 days, I do a 75% water change. Also, KOI is the dirdiest fish I have own! Cuz the tank is high, its sorta a pain to remove the debris from the bottom, I also have decorations for the other fish. I was thinking of starting up my de-commisioned 30g and just have the KOI in there by himself. The question I have, I know what experience has told me, but Im a member of this awesome site and value all of your responses. I would like to try an Emperor series cuz I have a Penquin, two Aquaclears and a fluval canister. If I go with an Emperor 280, that will have a 9.3 turnover rate. If I go with an Emperor 400, that will have a 13.3 turnover rate. Can I have too much of a turnover rate is my question? Thank you.

Can't have to much but I think you should be good with the canister and the aqua clears. Canister will hold the bio which shouldn't be much since stock will only be the koi? And the aqua clears for pure mechanical. Should be set like this.

Only small koi should be kept in a fish tank. Koi belong in ponds. Doesn't matter what your turnover rate is. A 30 galllon tank is too small for a 8" koi. Even a 125 gallon tank is too small. Mixing a koi with a clown knife is a bad idea. No offense, but do yourself a favor and do some reading about koi. You have a lot to learn.

Thanks for your responses guy. Joe Jaskot: I will do reading on KOI. I have read info on them, I'm wondering what is it that you're referring to? How big they can get, they need good filtration, adequate oxygen supply? Im not trying to mean. Its just that I have done research as I have said and am not sure where to direct my attention to? as of right now, I dont know if I plan to keep him when he gets to be about 2ft. I could also have a larger tank or even build an indoor pond as many people have done. All these thoughts are just going through my head now. Thank you.

Koi can grow to 36". They are a cold water fish. They need room to swim. They do better in an enclosure that is at least 3 feet deep. 250-300 gallons are recommended for an 8" koi. Your clown knife and your koi have completely different living requirements. Koi are basically vegetarians. Your clown knife requires a high protein meat based diet. Almost all fish need good filtration and an adequate oxygen supply
