Hi,

I have two Severums in my aggressive Cichlid tank. The tank was large enough for them to have fry. The fry are now free swimming. What i need to know is when to remove the fry from the tank and what is the best method of doing so? Any overall advice on fry care would also be appreciated.

Could really use some help.

Thanks,

Joshua

siphon them into another container, then move them to a seperate tank of their own filled with the water from the tank they were taken from. then feed them the normal "newborn cichlid diet" that someone will probably post here... i breed africans mostly, so i dont have much experience rearing baby CAs or SAs other than flowerhorns...

If they are already free-swimming, do it now. They will start venturing away from the spawning site and getting eaten by the other tankmates. Use either a piece of airline tubing or a siphon hose and just suck them into a bucket or container. The parents are going to be defensive and will probably attack you or the siphon hose, and for a little while after you remove the fry they're going to be in territorial mode, but they get over this after a day or so.

I'd raise the fry in a bare bottom tank, 20+ gallons. A sponge filter and a heater is all you really need. I feed my fry newly hatched baby brine shrimp but some have had luck with other frozen or prepared foods. Keep the tank bottom clean and do frequent water changes on the fry to cut down the risk of problems with bacteria and such. A lot of people experience their fry inexplicably dropping dead after a week or two, and usually this is linked to not keeping the tank clean.

OK so I don't have the Ideal set up for the fry. I have a 30 GL with peacful community fish. I tryed puting the last batch of fry in and only a couple survived. They have fry again and i'm not sure if thier is abetter way of introducing them to the 30 GL. I also have a 5 gallon bucket, a spare heater and a filer I could rig. do you think this would be the lesser of two evils or is thier a better method of getting them in the 30GL?
