So whenever my turtle eats, he seems to just swallow it and not chew..
such as feederfish, pellets, vegetables..
The only thing I've ever seen him eat without swallowing is the zoomed NATURAL growth formula pellets.

So I fed him mini carrot sticks that I cut up, on Saturday.
And today when I looked at the tank..there's was a bunch of orange stuff on the bottom. When I examined it, it was a ball of carrot feces. Like carrots inside feces, making it look all orange.
And I scooped them up and they still had their original shape..the sizes that I fed him.

Since the whole thing went through him and came out completely..does this mean he's not getting any nutrition out of the vegetable?
Is my turtle eating fine?

hmm just like yourself when you eat you poo... so as long as he is eating and pooing his digestive track is fine...unless its abnormaly stoll (runny , mis-colored, stuff like that....)

he cant digest the hard carrot

what you need to do is blanch or soften them up by placing them in boiling water for a minute or two.

ok thanks will boil to make them soft!
so all the hard carrots he's been eating means nothing?lol

youve been feeding him alot of carrots???

nooooooooooooo carrots have whats called calcium oxilates, it binds the calcium in the turtles diet preventing the body from using it.

carrots are fine but only feed them every now and then.

Oh, I been feeding him alot..i guess in turtle standards.
What so like once a month or something?

what would happen if a turtle doesn't get enough calcium?

One more thing DelGDO.
if I boil carrots, would it make the good stuff in it go away?
should I boil other vegetable too? like sweet potatoes?

they will be fine

your wanna blanch it, meaning let em sften in boiling water for a minute or two.

yes you wanna do it to all hard veggies, unless you got a full size adult then they will manage.

o-kay!

Hey I did what you said..boiled the bits for 2minutes..
I scooped his feces today and still found bits in it. It wasn't as bad as last time, but it still didn't look digested.

should I stop carrots, period?
what else vegetables/fruits are bad for aquatic turtles..if fed often
