Hi Evry1,

I know that (to an extent) aquaric turtles can be trained (like eating from my hand)but I also know that it takes a while and youve got 2 let them get used to you and show them they can trust u with food but I was wondering if there were any othr way to ley them know that they can trust me other than food?

Thanks Alot

for a moment i thought 2 turtle had only 3 legs i a no expert but they are nice

...:banhim: Just kidding but seriuosly dude, there is no other way, your turtles are terrifyed of you, what your seeing is normal turtle behavior, you need to be much more pacient, turtles are not ment to acept food of your hand it can take YEARS untill they are so confortable with you that they allow you to do that and if you want something you can train and handle then a turtle is not for you.

Some turtle species are just more skittish than others. Most basking species such as your YBS take longer to become accustomed to you as opposed to say a Musk Turtle.

The YBS are great looking. I have a Cooter which is so tame its unreal . You can touch his head "pet" him while he basks on driftwood. The map turtle lives in terror and if I even walk near the water trough he dives in and hides under plants, etc.

He will never tame but a good look at type pet.

My cooter took 6 months to tame down I hand feed him crickets, uncooked shrimp pieces once in awhile and think that made him much tamer that much faster.

He just goes crazy for both so trying special food might help. .

My old western painteds would all hand feed but their aim was pretty bad so I didn't do it much...they'd likely as not bite my fingers. All my basking type turts have this aim issue, and they also continue to focus on my hand and the food, splashing and trying to get my fingers, even after the food is in their tank.

yeah, i'm pretty sure conditioning via food is the only way you can train turtles and fish. it might help if you try using a long reptile tweezer to feed them at first when they're shy and then gradually shift to feeding them by hand after they've gained more confidence. hope it helps, it worked on mine. classic conditioning ftw :)
