Hey, Ive got a 250 gallon pond in my garage. Its got a 5x4 18 inch deep section and 4 shallower shelves. Where I live summers are in the 90's and winters are belows freezing at times. Is their a turtle that does not require uvb that can live out there year around. Its preformed but at a 15 mil pvc liner. Its filtered by a 550 pump pumping into a 20 can upflow bio filter. If I go with a turtle, their will be no fish. Is their any that will work. Mud turtles would work in the summer but need warmer temps.

I was reading about hibernating in ponds but would mine be too small. I read they need to be semi large pond and the turtles need to be at least sub adults.

I think most turtle going to need warmer water during the winter. U can by pond heater to help regulate the water temps during the winter season. Also by getting a heater it will open ur options a lil more. Im not sure, but the only type of turtle the dont require a uv light would be ones that are totally aquatic. But i am not too sure on that though.

Do some research and look into native Musk and Mud turtles. They don't necessarily need UVB lighting but it never hurts for any species that wants to bask.

I don't think you can get away without making some compromises such as a nice heater. another idea would be to setup an indoor tank that can house the turtle in winter's cold months so that you wont have to make any compromises. Mud or musk turtles don't get too large and you can probably get away with a 30 gallon for one adult and smaller tank for a juvi turtle.

ALL TURTLES NEED UVB, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. They will suffer from malnutrition and slowly die. If you can't keep a turtle in proper care then I would HIGHLY recommend not buying one for the sake of the specimen.

Ive been doing research on mud and musk turtles for a 55 paludarium in an inside tank. How likely are they to puncture the liner. The three turtles Ive found that dont need UVB are matamata, musk, and fly river turtles. Any suggestions on what heater for the pond. I was reading about native turtles hibernation in mud burrows, would this be possible to replicate in a pond this size. Thanks
