Turtle in fish tank??

Any turtle you mix in with fish leaves the fish at risk of being killed.

I keep a chinese soft-shelled turtle with my fish. At first he ate a few fish but I have him on pellets now.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. Don't keep turtles with fish you aren't prepared to lose.

I keep a pair of stinkpot Musk Turtles in a 100 gallon tub with a large pleco, female Convict Cichlid and 10 Giant Danios. I haven't lost any fish but I keep them well fed and they have a lot of space to get away from each other. If you get a young turtle that was never fed feeder fish your chances greatly improve. But there is always a risk when keeping fish and turtles. It also depends on the species of turtle you get too. Some are more prone to fish eating than others.

I wouldn't try an RES thats for sure. My daughter begged me to put an 18" channel cat she caught to put in the tank with him because she didn't think it would eat it and I figured maybe it won't but the second I put it in there the turtle had the fish by its mouth trying to tear it apart. I gave the fish to a friend that eats those algae tasting things. Nothing survives in its tank.

If you have a 20" turtle with 4" fish... of course the turtle is going to eat the fish...

But if you have 12" Cichlids and a 4" turtle the fish will probably eat his feet...

But in the same way if you put a huge Cichlid in with a tiny Cichlid... well you know what will happen...

If we use common sense and put a 10" turtle with a 10" fish... there is a pretty darn good chance they will coexist...

As mentioned, risk is involved... but come on... when keeping a breeding pair of Cichlids together risk is involved...

depends on temperement really
i had a bunch of sajica X convict hybrids i was culling in my turtle tank and one of them survived and lived for 4 years.
thought it was a turtle! he was such a character but i moved him in with the 11" mayan as he was hastling the tank he was in (a different one) and he got destroyed. which is strange cause he lived with the mayan before perfectly.

however i have an african sidenecked turtle who will strip a fish (4"er) down the the bone in about 2 minutes. turtles are very affective fish eaters so unless you are really confident and dont mind loosing the odd fish here and there, and pick some likely to be compatable species, then go for it.
my guess would be

mississippi map (not too aggresive in my experience)
with some lesser aggresive cichlid like a blue acara or something of that larger size and peaceful nature.
that way as long as the turtle is well fed and has somewhere to bask coexistance can be quiete simple
