hi! i was wondering how think should i have my sand, so my red eared slider does not dig into it/ wreck it? i also want to have have plants with him, so any ideas for the plants?

Turtles are hard on plants. The only ones that don't get eaten outright tend to be the tough slow-growing ones like Java Fern or Anubias...and since they are slow-growing they don't bounce back well from the physical beating they take from most turtles. Fast growers like Vals or most bunch plants are apparently just delicious, so...
Duckweed grows so fast that it can often survive being eaten in quantity. Hornwort seems not to be too attractive as a food, grows fast and is great with smaller turtles as it gives them a floating rest area.
Otherwise, I would just use a thin easily-cleaned layer of substrate and plastic plants.
