Looks great!I can see that same clay we have around here!Can't plant anything it that!
As for cover, do you think it will be wise to secure some netting over those, seeing as you definitely have predators around you that can manipulate a turtle shell.

Other than that, once you get some growth in there from clearing it out it should brighten right up!
 
That's cool, I'd like to do something like that for my red eared slider during the summer months....but do you know of any material other than plywood to use for the walls? My wife wouldn't be too pleased with the aesthetic look - and besides, it would rot before long here in CO!

As long as the wall is high enough that the turtle can't climb out (and turtles don't climb so well, so it doesn't have to be very high) I would say use anything you want. I've seen some nice garden fencing that looks like bamboo or picket fence that may work.
 
I used hardware cloth for mine a while back. you can see right through it and it is super easy to work with.
