So I have a turtle. And I feel that he finally needs to separate from my oscar so they both can grow a bit more without being cramped in the same tank. And I'm a hipster kind of girl so I was thinking about making him a pond, with a small fence around it, inside my fenced yard.

I have a turtle pond available to me. But I would need fencing. I have to know... would that be a bad idea for my turtle? like.. the whole plastic thing? I think its a great idea. Easy to clean, cute, open enough for exercise and growing.

I'm really looking forward to experimenting with this.

He is only about 7 inches. He's getting a bit too big to share a 55g with my oscar.

What part of Florida?

You'll need to be able to do cleaning and water changes conveniently, and enough water so it doesn't get hot in our sweltering summers or too cold in our make believe winters. Digging the pond into the ground will help stabilize the temp.

The plastic itself will be fine, just make sure opossums / raccoons / and hawks can't get at him and he can't force his way out.

"hipster kind of girl" not without an Avatar!!! Come on get with it!

Great idea for a turtle... Just provide enough pred. protection.

Yeah, my front yard has tall wooden fances that surround it. I was thinking of getting him an umbrella to sheild about half of the entire habitat, so the water doesn't get too hot, plus it would offer some protection. I would probably change water every two days or so.

I was going to build sand ramps up one side, and stick enough rocks and caves where he can hide and sun bask.

Honestly I think the only visitors he'll have are the pink geckos around the yard. And some bugs. And the occasional fish treat.

And I'll pick my avatar when I'm good and ready, good Doctor.

With our heat you may want to cover the whole thing.

Watch overhead, I have two hawk families living nearby along with every other feathered creature that want to eat my fish & turtles coming around all the time.

Are you ready now, huh...are ya, huh, huh?

a compact filter pump combo would be nice... use a aqua bell head to keep water moving and might help with a lil evap cooling but i doubt it in your summer heat...

It is pretty hot. But I wanted him to be able to sunbathe and etc. But Whatever is safest for him. Eventually I want to get him a filter for it, but until I can get the money, I'll just be doing routine cleanings and water changes.

Defiantely not ready yet.

You dont need a filter at all for a small type turtle pond water changes work great .
2 good water changes a week are fine
Siphon the bottom (ofcourse dont use gravel, etc in pond) use it to water your garden or just let it flow on grass .
Put flat piece of wood over a small area of pond to provide shade and the turtle will be great .
Ofcourse have a un exposed basking area . If you can bury it atleast 12 inches it makes big difference on cooler water near the bottom
