I'm looking at getting a canister filter for my 55 gallon africa helmeted turtle tank. There's currently two turtles in there. I've never used canister filters so don't know much about them, but right now I'm trying to decide between the Rena 722 Filstar XP3, Fluval 306 or Fluval 406. What is everyone else using and would any of those three be able to do the job? Right now I'm using a Marineland 350, but have to do water changes weekly and would like to try to cut back on that.

I never used a filstar, but alot of people seem to like them. Fluvals on the other hand I have used an they seem to work well enough, I'd get the 406 over the 306 for a 55 gallon. The one down side to the Fluval I can tell you is that the parts inside can get brittle over time, Not that big a deal, but something to look out for.

Hope that helps.

i had a marineland that worked well. I use wetdrys now though.

I use a Cascade 1500 and a Marineland C360 without any issues.

There! That one! That was what I had on my mata mata when he was in a 75 gallon tank.

Glad I could be of some assistance! :)

One side note, I found the Cascade to be a little easier to clean and maintain.

yeah the marineland is a bit difficult to open/ close for maintenance.

Decided on the Fluval 306. Once it gets here and gets running for a few weeks I'll post an updated thread on how it's going.

cascade or a rena xp3... either would be good on a turtle tank
