When I only had one tank, my turtle tank, I would just do a water change every other day. I run UGF, yes, it's so funny, I still use a UGF... It was fine with the amount of water changes I did.

Well now that I have more tanks to manage and I am busy with school, I can't do that many water changes, so I'm switching filters. I can't use a HOB because it would be loud, canisters are expensive and I heard they don't work well if the tank is half filled..

So are a few of the biggest internals I can find my best bet?

I think that a canister is worth it. It should work fine with a half full tank and it will cost about the same as the 4-5 big internal filters you would need to keep turtle water clean. I invested in a marineland c-220 and have not regretted it since then. At the time, I had it running on my 75 gallon tank but it is currently hooked up with a wet-dry on my 135 gal nearly 3 years later and it is still working great.

Sumps and canisters are the best ways to filter turtle tanks. None of the other filter types can really keep up with them. Canisters might be expensive but they are well worth it. Sumps can be made from commonly sold items so they're cheap to build. Just something to think about.

Some hobs are quiet. Don't get aquaclear if you have the tanks in your room.

If it was coming out of the HOB, falling 6-8" before hitting the water, I'm pretty sure it will be loud. ;)

I guess I'll just get a canister. Hopefully my dad will pay half of it because he's the one who didn't do his research when he bought that quarter sized RES 9 years ago. I'm just thankful it's a male.

are you saying aquaclears are loud? i have a smaller aquaclear (cant remember unit name but its for like up 35g or so, its like the size up from the small one) and its in my room and sometimes i have to actually check it to make sure it is still on thats how quiet it is, but yeah with any HOB and tank only filled half way the water falling that far would def be pretty loud lol as for canisters, i have a rena Xp3 that i have had running on my big tank (120g) for like 8yrs with no problems and haven't had to replace any parts or anything, just have to rinse the sponges when they get clogged but that's bout it

i use 3 aquaclear 110 on my turtle tank only thing in it is a ornate and a map turtle...... just use driftwood to stop it from falling so far so its nice and quite

Hi i have a 55 gallon turtle tank that has 3 red eared sliders and a common snapping turtle in it and i made a sump filter out of a 5 gallon bucket a 190 GPH pump and alot of sponges it keeps the tank really clean i still do water changes about once a week and i also have a 20-40 gallon HOB filter that works really well.
