Very much south..
it just happens that I need more space for my aro's and therefore need to free a 250 gallon tank, now used by aquatic turtles.

My initial idea was to dose the running tank with potassium permanganate to wipe out the organic matter and then empty and clean the tank.

The recycling would start immediately thereupon....

Am I overdoing it? would a healthy dosage of methylene blue ( or something else ? )do the trick and spare me the filter media?

I've had in the past to do these type of conversion quickly, with mixed results...Sometimes a big wc was enough, sometimes the fish did not react perfectly well and took some time adjusting.

Opinions, please:)

Just have new filters cycling on another tank, drop it 100%, wipe down, fill, and add the pre cycled fish filters...Lots of options really...

the process is already under way..

I think the potassium permanganate is actually a good idea. Turtles are filthy creatures and you why not play it safe when we're talking about awesome/expensive fish.

the problem with potassium permanganate is that it kills the filter media and the ensuing media rampage could do worse than god.

I spared the filtration system ( massive, by the way ), did a 80% wc, connected a UV on a 24/7 basis and a cannister full of activated carbon..will do wc's for the next week. Around the weekend I will transfer the black aro's...
