ive seen it done on youtube and whatnot. what kind of turtles are ok to put with cichlids? any percautions beside the extra bioload

FRTs often work. I keep a turtle in my swamp, but I don't keep any cichlids with it. She ignores ropefish and similar stuff but chases around mollies.

I'd actually be more worried about large cichlids injuring the turtle than vice versa, unless the turtle can actually catch the cichlids. Either way, somebody is likely to end up hurt.

If you have a choice, I would go with something like a musk turtle over a red-ear slider. They tend not to go after fish as much and don't grow as large. Also, when getting a turtle, I would look for a male. If you get a female you will need to provide her a place to drop her eggs when that time of year rolls around or else she could have serious health problems.

so go with a musk turtle. and i dont think a jag is gonna get hurt by a turtle and vice versa. im changing my stock getting rid of my mayan and dempsey. in the end i want my stock to be jag/cuban cichlid/firemouth/jardini arowana/polypterus/turtle. what do u guys think????

Honestly I don't see that working unless the tank is huge and even then it's a hit or miss. A jag very well try and beat on a turtle. Mine killed a 15 inch common pleco when it was 10 inches. Not to mention the problem a jardini may pose

true, i hear ya. i might giv it a try in the near future if it works thats such a cool tank!

ok most turtles need at lest 200+ gal. and most stay sum-what or even completely predatory their whole life, some like the musk turtle start out as vegi eaters and some like the florida softshell turtles are aggressive active hunters there entire life's.

i keep my 9 inch FRT with my 10 inch armatus with no problem at all.
