Does anyone know a turtle that stays small to where it would not need more than a 20 long? My girlfriend wants one and I want to save her some heartache will getting one that is too hard to care for or one that will outgrow the tank too quick.

A stinkpot musk turtle. I'd still recommend a 30 gal, but you can get away with a 20 long.
I second that. It would be nice to eventually get it something a little bigger like a 40 breeder (or a nice big plastic tub if you're a little short on money but have the space), but a 20L isn't terrible

I just got a little musk a couple months ago (although I also have a couple bigger basking species) and he is really cool. He's only about 2.5" and will probably only grow to 4 or 4.5". They are very easy to care for and not picky eaters

I don't know, I wouldn't keep a Musk in anything smaller than a 30 gallon. They enjoy a lot of floor space, something that a 20 long doesn't really supply.

I think a 20 long would be okay for a musk as long as it is kept on its own and given plenty of open space (plants are fine but I wouldn't crowd the tank with tack y pirate decorations). If you get a floating dock for it too it would take up less space than if you stacked rocks for it to bask.

Down the road if you can upgrade but a 20 will keep your turtle happy for a long time.

My GF thinks my common is ugly as sin, but she loves her personality. You could look into a Striped Mud Turtle, they are similar to Common Musks as far as care go but stay a bit smaller and some are really beautiful turtles. My little girl is the prettiest turtle I own IMO.
