Just out of curiosity, what's generally the most common turtle in the uk?

Most common would be red ear slider IMO. We do not have any native turtles if that's what you were asking. But I have seen lakes over here that freeze over in the winter and in the summer they are full of red ear sliders.

Depending on the origin of your S. odoratus (Northern/Southern morph), they could very well overwinter where you live without any issues. And the same goes for your Map (depending on the species that is).

Is there different characteristics between the two areas.

Yes. The Northern morph is larger, lighter in color and usually has a more rounded shell while the Southern morph is darker in color, more oval in shape and is slightly smaller. I have one of each.
