i have 2 old 55gals laying in my basement that i have nothing to do with and was wondering if i could take the top trim off and a side panel on each tank and silicon them together would the glass be thick enough ? and how would i brace the seam where the two tanks meet ? and what about the top of the tank how would you go about making a top brace for it thanks :)

i think you could do it. never tryed it myself so i am not positive. just put a glass brace at the top right at the seem. (if i did this i would be sure to over brave at the seem) the only thing is it will be hard to move so think that part out really well but i say give it a shot if u are willing to take the risk

theres a post on here somewhere about a guy who used 3 to make a L or something.
seems easier buying a tank. But im not handy

You can do anything with enough creativity and silicone, but I wouldn't ever expect to move the tank with it leaking

The deeper the tank the thicker the glass needs to be for the weight of the water. A 55G glass thickness is rated for the weight/amount of water it holds.
Now your going double the heidth. Scares me..... lol

lol i have thought about doing this with other fish tanks including two 55's lol i think it can work if you maybe silicone it good enough or get some extra glass to hold it up? idk just guesses im curious myself -.-

does anyone actually know if i can do this and if i can how?! LOL

My tank is 30" high 72" wide and it has 12mm = .472" ..... I wouldn't try it....
If you put two 55G tanks together they will be 40" high and a 36" high tank Minimum 16mm = .629" glass thickness.....at 4 feet wide.... scary scary....

I believe he's talking about sealing them together, end to end to create a 110gallon - 8' tank. Not stacking them.

I'd say your weakest point would be where they are sealed together at the top. I wouldn't worry so much about the bottom as it will still be a factory seal to the bottom pane on each 55.

I would take the top brace's off, remove the end glass from each tank and reinstall the brace, once you have both 55's sealed together, glue the braces together where your left 55 meets your right 55. You'll need to modify the original brace on each end of course to account for the missing panes of glass.
