I'm getting quotes on a custom 190 gallon with a small footprint and one overflow with two 1" returns. I need advice as whether to go with one 1 1/2" drain, two 1" drains, or two 1 1/2" drains. I want to make sure I'm prepared for any future needs.

The principal filtration will come from two Eheim 2028's in parallel that we currently use on a smaller tank. I want to add mechanical filtration before and after the Eheim's. The ones before will reduce the bio-mass since they are RUSCO spin down filters. The one after will polish the water before the UV.

You can make "too big" smaller, you can cap off a not needed now...
A whole lot easier than drilling.
I would do the 2- 1 1/2" .

Then how about the returns? Do you recommend drilling two 1 1/2" returns reducing them to 1"?

i went with 2 1.25" drains on my 165. each drain is rated for approximately 900gph.
