1. using 2- 55g plastic drums stacked on top of eachother. bottom one stacked with some bio filtration media and sump pump at bottom and hosing going all the3 way to the top
this would be a goldfish or guppy breeder or maybe even convicts lol.

2.converting a hang on filter to drain water into a sump tank below my 150g or just leave it is this too much work for little acheivment?
btw i have 3 pumps sitting in my garage from my uncle he does maitenence at the local newspaper and he has alot sitting around

I don't get the question? Sorry..

If you stack 2-55gal drums, are the fish in the top barrel?

If you cut the barrels to put large items in, you will loose structural integrity. You will have to set them side by side, one higher than the other if you want gravity feed. This makes a great pond filter or major tank filter
.
Is this what you are talking about? http://www.podzilla.us/aquascapeDS/overflow/overflow.html

How about this rather than adapting a HOB?

How powerful are the pumps? and were they used for water or chemicals?

Not to be nit picky, but you r writing is hard to read ;) I think I understand what you mean with the two barrels in #1. Stack them with the filter and pump in the lower one and holes drilled in the upper barrels bottom to act as a drip tray into the filter media in the lower barrel. It is a good idea if it were say eleven gallon buckets...at some point you will need to clean the filters. 55g of leaking barrel is not going to move very easy, and the fish won't like being in a dry barrel. Also, a power outage will be a death sentance for your fish.

How about using the two barrels as two feeder tanks. Drill and plumb both to a sump filter. You could use one for fry and the other for holding those that are ready to meet your monster.

#2. I have no idea what you are really trying to ask and acheve. Maybe post a pic of what you have and a drawing of what you want to do.
