Are there any disadvantages or problems with having 2 separate lighting periods in a day? I'm thinking of maybe a 2-3hr ON period in the morning and another 5-6hr ON in the evening. The reason would be to simply enjoy the fish during the times you're usually around the house without needing a single 12-13hr ON period which would probably be too much.

FWIW, I currently don't have anything growing except heaps of hair algae (probably because my lights are on too long :hitting:), but would like to try java fern or something relatively easy. Also, I currently have a basic community tank with nothing requiring unusual lighting... that I'm aware of anyway .

EDIT: dang, even though I tried searching before my post, I just found this one... http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163438

should be fine. i have my light timers come on for about an hour in the morning before i go to work, and then again when i get home

Thanks! As you can see above, I just found your old post.
