Hey guys so first how big does a juvi serra need to be to ID it? I have one that is around 2.5 in now, is he big enough?

Secondly I have him in a 20 gallon long tank. I would like to get a powerhead for a little current. For a piranha of that size in that size of a tank, what gph should I look for on the powerhead? thanks!

To get an accurate ID you will prob have to wait until it gets around 5 inches ......in a 20 long I would do around 500 gph as long as u don't have very fine sand .....make sure there is a dead spot for him to rest

500gph? Wow ok thanks I was thinking quite a bit less, Im glad I asked. Haha that sounds like a lot!

Just think of their habitat; Fast flowing rivers, spots to stop the flow, heavy vegetation.

I honestly wouldn't use a powerhead on a serra that small. Too many things can go wrong, one of them is it getting sucked into the propeller. Wait until it reaches 4-5 inches until then flow from the filter should be fine.

I agreed..hes to small for power head. Naturally piranha love high current, but you can only find adult in here current. Small will hide and cover themself from getting eat. I would dimmed your light, put some heaving plants and woods. I would also get 40gallon breed tank for him even better. Serra is like any other fish it will grow fast once it hit 5-6" range then it slow down. maybe 1" per year after that.
