Two questions. Cleaning sand and splitting slate?

As far as cleaning sand. If it has rather large, heavy grains, you can put it in a bucket or other container (small tanks work too), put s hose into the bottom of the container and run water through it. The really small particles that you are washing out should go up and over the side of the container. Also, the stirring action of the water should make it pretty easy to move the hose around in bottom of the container.

As far as splitting slate, I usually just drop it on its edge on a hard surface. I'm sure people have figured out better ways, but I just do it in a pretty simple, quick, and barbaric manner lol

Ok, I can finally use my knowledge of slate for good. Slate is a very easy to read you can normally see that it is layered. All you have to do find the layering, take a hammer and anything wedge like and whack it likely untill it starts to split.

I will use your knowledge of slate only for good and never ever evil :D

hammer and a screwdriver works great for splitting slate..

Well, I remember why I stopped using sand.

I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned some more, and it still didn't come out clean. The tank got very clouded.

I guess I will let it settle over night and clean some more in the morning

When I cleaned the sand for my 125 I used 5 gal buckets and took them outside and put a couple gals of water in the bucket with 10-15Lbs. of sand. Swirled it aroung a few times then dumped out the water. Then repeted like 5 times at least per bucket. Takes FOREVER But it works pretty good.

Also putting a good polish pad into your filter will help clean it the rest of the way .

I'm guessing this is play sand you're using? I don't think I'll ever use it again. I had to let the tank settle for around 48 hours when I used it. With pool filter sand, I didn't even rinse it and let it settle for about 20 min. before putting the fish back in the tank. It is so much cleaner than play sand
