I work in a pet store and I get these two questions a lot. They are seemingly simple questions but I've not found a lot of information on them and I want to be sure that I am educating people correctly on the fish they buy.

Upside Down Catfish : I get asked WHY they swim upside down all the time. I am not sure why they do and all of the articles I've read on them don't mention why--they just mention that this fish has an unusual swimming posture and is colored accordingly so as to be camouflaged. Do they swim upside down because they enjoy eating mosquito larvae?

Goldfish : I know that Goldfish put off more ammonia than many of the tropical fish we sell, but why? What is it about their body chemistry that makes them put off more ammonia?

I appreciate any insight you might have. :)

I have no idea why the catfish are like that...I too am having a problem finding info on why...
(edit: I just read that they swim that way to eat insects off of the surface)

As for the goldfish, they seem to put off more ammonia because they poo alot...I know it sounds dumb, but they eat everything from what you feed them to plants, other fishes poo, and algae. They are messy fish in general.....

jenBLKAROWANA is right about the goldfish, all they do is poo and require lots of cleaning. As for the catfish it's from them spending time in caves and small holes, so it likes to come out at night.

Hey Mrs. Rally,

Gold fish have a very inefficient digestive systems. What they consume is not very well utilized by thier body so what they pass hasn't been processed very thoroughly. You could kind-of compair it to partialy digested food being put in the aquarium. Not the greatest compairison but in a nut shell, that's why gold fish tax the aquarium more so than most other fish.

The upside down cat (synodontis Nigriventris) swim upside down because they live on the underside of caves and ledges in the wild. THis is an adaptation or "eveloution" if you will to the enviroment that occour in.
