So I'm brainstorming an idea that I'd like to run across you DIY guys. I have a 75 gallon tank on one of those metal frame stands that can hold a second tank on bottom. Currently there's only one tank on the stand, running standard hob filtration. I have a second 75 that was given to me. Formerly a reef tank, it's drilled in the corner and had a built in overflow. I thought of just plugging it, but then got the idea of putting it on top and setting it up to drain into the bottom tank. One large canister filter will have its intake on the bottom and it out flow running to the top. Will it work? I've never tied tanks together before, not sure if im asking for a mess here, but the water can only flow out of one tank as fast as its pumped in right?

I would think having the intake on the top would work better with gravity. Don't want your pump working extra hard to push all that water up right? I really don't know and I've thought about this many of times. It should be interesting to hear what more knowledgeable members will say.

Ahh but then you would have the bottom tank overflowing if you had the intake on top. Ehhk.

Come on guys help me...errr him out. :p

seems possible with something like an FX5. You've got me curious as well.

it will work just fine.. as long as your 1 filter is large enough to support your load..like other said a FX5 will do the trick.. just put the intake(intake of water) part of the FX5 on the bottom tank and setup the pressure side (pump water out side) of the filter holes into the top tank with over flow setup(plumbed) that it drains the top tank water into the bottom tank.. water will only go as fast as the pump of the FX5 pushes..take some pics when done..

I enjoy chaining tanks together :), just let gravity do the work for you. Not a bad idea to run an overflow box on the bottom tank out to a sump with the return to the top. Herea some pics of 2 55's chained on one sump. I raised a regular metal stand on bricks so they could drain into the sump. I also have a 90 and 25 chained tovether the same way.

These are systems i built for a customer, tanks and all. 4 tanks per system with the bottom being the sump. All tanks work with gravity so one pump per 4 tank system. All tanks are drilled sp they just drain into one another.

I have also done this with only one drilled tank on top years ago. I just ran a large canister on the top tank and a submersible pump from the bottom tank to the top to circulate the water. A bit bulky to have a pump in the bottom tank tho.

I really like that 4 tank stack setup, Wednesday.
