I have an Eheim 2217 and CF400 on my 125. Currently both spray bars are on one side and both intakes are on the other. Using a Maxi-Jet Pro 1200 on the intake side for circulation.

First question: What are the pros and cons to tying the intakes and returns together with something homemade (PVC). Any caveats?

Second question: Assuming that's not a viable option, what is the optimal placement of intakes and returns? I have them this way so the returns are basically invisible and the intakes are more or less tucked away in the back corner leaving the middle of the tank equipment free. Is there a better or preferred way?
