ignore the depth most aquariums kept in the home are not deep enough to really make a difference. (36+ depth you start to get issues)

after that check the plants you want and then look at the environment where they grow

i suggest doing the math in watts per square inch instead of watts per gallon and measure that against sunlight per square inch in the habitat of the plant.

once you realise that you will not have enough light (you wont) then buy a bigger light or do what the rest of us do and accept that your plants will metabolize at a relatively slow pace per hour.

once you understand that turn up the time on your light to increase the hours your plants metabolize to bring up your growth.

if you want to make things simple then just do 2-3 Watts per gallon
and sleep easy at night that your plants will live

The plants you are trying to grow is probably the most important factor since not all have the same lighting demand.

if your going low light and low tech. and the tank is 48" wide.

id get a single or double tube flourescent light and stock it with a hagen life-glo2 bulb.
