I am replacing the bottom panel of glass on a 150 gallon given to me and am trying to decide which type of glass is best to use. I have read low iron glass or tempered glass. I have also read about other glasses people use. Can anyone help? Preferrably a glass xpert. I don't know how it broke before, but they just siliconed a piece of thin glass on top of the crack and have used it for a couple years. However, I don't trust it and would like to make it dependable.

Well that depends on if you want it drilled on the bottom for overflows or not :) Tempered you cannot do this.. Well for a price you can but you could buy 2 brand new 150's with stands and canopies for the same price :)

Measure the thickness and decide how you want to run your filtration.. Once this is done you can call a local glass dealer for the piece which is going to run from 75 to 200 dollars just a rough estimate... And if you are going to replace with somehting you can drill for a sump system, might as well have them drill it for you too:) probably an extra 30 - 40.00 which is what you would pay to buy the tools to do it yourself as well.. The latter being do it yourself NOT suggested if you have no experience there..

Also after replacing.. alot of hobbiests will get some plastic egg crate and layit across the bottom of the tank to better distribute the weight of rocks and orniments as this is probably a good guess as to a cause of the initial crack :)

:iagree:

Did you get a stand with it? If so check it for squareness and that it contacts the whole tank(possibly warp with old owner and they didn't know it?)...use s'foam sheet when you put it back on the stand.

How about some incriminating pix of your work...

The sheet of glass will be approximatley 24 inches by 48 inches. The thickness is 8 cm now, but would like to slightly increase that. Also, I don't want it drilled. I don't own a digital camera so I can't take pics yet. The original owner cracked it on the right side of a center overflow and took a piece of glass and smooshed it over the crack with alot of silicone. He used it for a year or so like that and then was given to my friend. My friend built a stand and canopy for it and he used it for about three years. When he moved from a house to an apartment he gave it all to me.
