Hi all,

Was wondering what pellets you would recommend, im looking into:

Grand Sumo original and red (a bit expensive) has anyone had good results with this? Apparently its meant to be one of the best on the market.

OR

There is this one from Thailand, has anyone tried this?

Currently my one is taking Delik Flowerhorn (brought from hong kong) and Tetra Prima.

Thanks

LOL Those are crap tbh. Get a real quality pellet. New Life Spectrum is pretty good imo.

I wouldn't be surprised if RD chimed in.:P

You can do a search in this folder & you'll find enough nutritional/pellet info to sink a ship.

As far as NLS, match the size of the pellet to the fishes mouth. Those 1mm cichlid pellets are only good for very small FH. (under 3") I feed my FH the 3mm Large Fish sinking pellets, but there is also a 4.5 Jumbo floating pellet that will work equally well if your fish prefers floaters.

Depends on how you see the pellet as, but XO is one of the most widely used pellets in Thailand. Used by all breeders, resellers, and local hobbyist themselves. I bet your RD in your avatar digest them before as well...if its birth is from overseas. :D

I use NLS pellets and have great results from them. My Male Midas that I got from Jeff Rapps looks awesome and I only feed him NLS.

Interesting. My fish probably has since it was born in Asia:P

Really, and you have personally asked ALL the breeders in Thailand? LOL

Interesting, as every breeder in Thailand that I have corresponded with over the years has told me that they feed bloodworms, exclusively, to all of their juvenile FH. They do so as all juvie fish will eat them, they're cheap, and they are reasonably high in protein.

For anyone that has imported juvenile FH from Thailand it becomes rather obvious that the vast majority of juvie FH have never even seen a pellet, let alone eaten one prior to being exported.

I don't have an Ocean Free XO Humpy Head container in front of me so I am going off of what I found off of a well known FH site.

Ingredients:
  • special head growth enhancing ingredient -- not specified
  • fish protein
  • quality white fish meal
  • krill
  • spirulina
  • yolk meal
  • wheat germ
  • dried yeast
  • wheat flour
  • antarctic shrimps
  • protease
  • stable multi-vitamin & mineral
  • lecithin
  • immune substance
  • calcium
  • enzyme
  • organic minerals
protein 58%
fats 3.8%
fibre 3.7%
ash 13%

The biggest problem I have with this food is the mystery "special head growth enhancing ingredient ", which IMO is nothing more than a marketing gimmick, or hormones. Either way it sends a red flag up for me. And secondly, the mystery fish protein, which I would assume is fish hydrolysate, where quality and nutritional content can vary greatly.

The next issue I have with this food is the protein content, which is extremely excessive for a FH, or any species of cichlid, even those designated as strict carnivores. (which FH are not)

Again, more marketing for those who are either totally ignorant as to a FH's nutritional needs, or for those who simply don't care & are under the illusion that massive amounts of protein equate to BIG fish, with BIG humps. I see the exact same thing with Asian discus breeders, who have no concern about the longevity of their fish, only how fast that they can pump them up.

I don't know that I would refer to this food as crap, but I certainly wouldn't feed it to any of my fish.

Challenging me about knowing my connections overseas here? As juveniles they feed them blood worms mainly, but does that mean that just because blood worms is their staple food as juvenile for a fast growth mean there is no XO pellets being involved for other fish?
For dirty breeders or resellers who buy entire batch from big farms where everyone in SE Asia get their fish from(not going to mention the farm names and where before I get an overflow of PM's). They throw their whole batch into ponds and live feeds is all that works the growth of their fish, which explains the heavy internal worms and sickness from dirty resellers/breeders.
So to really nail everything down here, what your trying to say is that not every breeders/resellers use XO pellets? So does this mean that all the larger fish including their self claim "Master Piece" aren't fed XO pellets as well? I specifically said resellers/breeders/hobbyist. Not certain food for certain age of the fish. :grinno:
