I dont want to use an RO system. I was wondering about using a carbon filter (brita/PUR etc ) or bottled spring water? anyone using these methods? also how often do you add water to a SW and do you have to add more salt to every bucket of water that goes in?

its better then tap by all means, but your still keeping some impurities in the water. Most will not effect your tank all that much, but should still be takin in consideration and monitored. Also dont expect high gallon per filter ratings. These filters are made for minimal use really, not high gallons a day, where as RO systems are able to produces thousands of gallons without needing a change. From a cost stand point, its probably going to be cheaper in 6 months of operation then a brita filter.

I top off my 3 tanks (total tank volume ~175g) a little under 5g/day.
