is it normal that my male jack dempsey turns his spangles from lime green to deep, navy blue-almost purple, and constantly has his fins that blue color too?

I belief its tipical, I have a 6in, Jack and he does the same thing. If u leave the light off for a while then turn it on, he will immediately change colors, as well, does urs do that?

Yup, most all cichlids have the ability to change their pigments in their scales. My Jack Dempsey, when i had him would always darken when I entered the room, and especially when feeding blood worms. :grinno:

ok cool.. the only time its really dramatic is feeding time, his fins and body turn so blue he looks purple
