I really like these fish, but I've never seen one,
all the shops i go to have no idear what Im talking about
when i ask about their price and availability.
So if anyone on here keeps these fish (anything from this genus)
please share some info, prices, etc.

cheers

We keep the Tyrannochromis Macrostoma, Maculiceps and Nigriventer. Still looking for the Polyodon.

All these fish can get quite large. A grown out speciman should reach the 30cm. The fish are less aggressive than their name sounds. If you can keep a Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus you can keep a Tyrannochromis as well. Especially the Maculiceps seems a very docile fish.

Due to the size of these fish I would recommend a tank of 2.5meters minimum.

About prices, I don't really know. That would differ per country I guess, but due to rarity expect to pay a hefty price for these animals.

Here in Holland 40-50 euro for a fish of ~12cm Wildcaught is the average price(if you can find them)

If you want a web address of a german importer that often has these fish let me know

www.dykemeister.com gets them in all the time. I bought over 20 from him. They are easy and cool. Only issue is if you get WC is treating them for parasites etc. But I tough they were easy. Hard water and salt.

Whoops. Site seems to be gone. Eric Dyke was the guy but I have searched and cannot find him again. Sorry. Try Atlantis in NY. they ship and can definately get them.

I have a pair of macrostomas around 6.5" and 4 nigriventers between 4" and 6" on a 300 gallon tank.

The macrostomas are very agressive towards each other(had to transfer one to a another tank) and especially to those that are smaller than them they often hunt and try to kill so they can eat them. A true and fantastic predator with an amazing behavior.

The Nigriventors on the other hand, surprised me a lot because they are very peaceful even housed together with a few 3.5" smaller cichlids for now. Mine bred at a really young age at around 5 inches.

They males of both species start coloring up at around 6" or so if not wild and if from a good source will show a ton of color when mature. The macrostomas will grow up to 14" if given the proper tank space!

they sound like great fish, only problem is prices in australia,
usually any american price can almost be doubled to get a rough estimate for aussie prices, but its not allways that simple.
If theres an aussie that has bought these fish, what are they worth here ?

cheers for the info people.
