Is a 180(72x24x24) large enough to house a small group of Tyrannochromis nigriventer. I want to stock 1 male and 3 females plus another group of haps that I haven't decided on yet.

That is probably the minimum (180g) you could get away with. They are a pretty rare fish, many of them mis ID'd with the Tyran. Macrostoma.

They get very large and I would be very careful selecting another group of Haps as tank mates.

Good luck and post pictures.

I agree, I'd say that is minimum. and good luck finding that fish cuz its rare!

And if you do find them, call me and tell me where!

These fish can get up to 14" or so. Your 180 should be OK.

Google Dave's rare aquarium fish. This guy has medium sized tyrannochromis nigriventer on his price list for $12 apiece. Never bought fish from them so can't comment on their quality. One of these would be very nice in that 500 you mentioned in your thread, wouldn't it? If you check out this site click on the fish's name and a photo will pop up. Please see if you can find out from the picture if they are actually selling what they say they are. Picture looks different than others I have seen of this species. I have noticed that some of these large hap species exhibit some variation in color. I believe the picture credit is the owner of this business so I am assuming the picture is of fish he is producing.

I know Dave. He has good stuff. I'll give him a shout.

I feel a group order coming on. LOL

Unfortunately I have to wait until I sell my fish and reset up my tank. Yours may be grown already before I even get mine. Waiting sucks. At least you'll have another monster fish for your 500.

Tyrannochromis Nigriventer get quite large as stated and they can be really aggressive. I would advise against keeping these in a 180gallon. Especially if you want to keep other fish there as well.

I have a Wildcaught male that is about 12", its not that he is aggressive(maybe I am lucky) a fusco is a lot worse in comparison. But 12'+ worth of predator fish is really big.

Have a look at the photo's on my site:
My site is still in Dutch(I am sorry), but if you click on the Button "Malawi's" you will find the fish I keep along with the taken pictures.

here are some of the photo's
