lots of advantages....keeps bad bacteria and parasites in control....algea in control.... I will never run my tank without one again....
I've been using them on selective tanks for years. They definately have the advantages stated above...
How often do you members maint. your UV?

they have to be run 24/7 or what is the point parasites and algue dont sleep 
as for cleaning the glass sleeve i only do that once per year the UV goes on the return pipe of your filter so it shouldnt get dirty
some bulbs last 1yr some only 6months
you have to change the bulb on the date needed or its worthless

Our tank is in daylight all day because of large floor-to-ceiling picture windows and two skylights. We had a bad green water problem. The UV sterilizer very quickly took care of the green water. We went from this:

Our pacu continuously get cut and scraped up by slamming into the tank lids. I long ago stopped worrying about them, because their injuries heal up very quickly...no Melafix needed. Our UV sterilizer really does its job.

depending on your situation dont let them be your simple solution... if your tank is green or cloudy for any other reason than lighting.. u have a problem that should be addresed differently than a uv.... most use them for water polishing and ultra clear disease free fishkeeping not as a filter support...in other words dont get lazy on maitinence because your uv.... still test water
