Looking to buy my 1st unit for future use on a possible SW tank. but for now I can use on my 72g BF discus tank.

for 8w, what does this cover I guess in water flow/what size tank/gallonage?
this looks like a great deal compared to other online sellers with free shipping.

but vs. 10w for $95 or 25w for $157-$165, of course more wattage is better but how much better?

then marine has a great deal also on a 15w.

but since it is important for slower water flow for longer contact, I should also buy a lower rated powerhead

your feedback is greatly appreciated.

thks all.

Lifegard Aquatics (formerly Pentair) 8 Watt U.V. Sterilizer
Our Price: $134.99
Discount: -$45.00 (Save 33%)
Sale Price: $89.99

Pentair Aquatics Ultraviolet sterilizers produce U.V. light at 2537 angstroms, exerting a lethal effect on the unwanted, disease causing micro-organisms. Pentair Aquatics U.V. sterilizers, when used properly, are extremely beneficial in destroying disease causing pathogens, harmful bacteria, mold spores, yeast, virus, protozoa, fungi as well as algae. Pentair Aquatics U.V. sterilizers use pure hard quartz material in their bulbs, which dramatically increases the U.V. output as compared to other conventional bulbs of equal wattage. Pure quartz material resists solarization andimproves the longevity of the U.V. bulb. The unique test tube like, pure quartz sleeve isolates the bulb from water contact, providing an optimal bulb operating temperature of 100° f (38° c). This optimal bulbtemperature results in a 35% higher U.V. output over conventional units without sleeves.

After many years of using UV lights and several of those years using them when raising/breeding Blue Dempseys which are prone to parasitic infection... I suggest...

1W of UV Stength per 10 gal of tank volume...
10 gph of flow rate per 1W of UV strength...

So for a 72 gal... 8W would work, a little bigger is fine...

For an 8W light, 80 gph is fine, a little less is fine...

This will kill parasites, algae, fungus & offer all other potential benefits of a UV light...

I do not know of any brand UV light that I would steer people away from. Danner's Pondmaster UV's are my favorite because they are built like a tank... I like the Turbo Twists because they have a tank mounting clip built right in which is convenient...
